Beauty Review- Essence Liquid Liner

Today I have an amazing beauty find for you all!

Let me introduce you to the Essence Liquid Liner (waterproof formula). This is one liquid liner you will definitely want to add to your arsenal!

I have heard a few beauty vloggers refer to this liner as a dupe for Stila’s stay all day liquid liner but without the heavy price tag ($29 CAD).

essenceliner

What I love: Pretty much everything! I have tried many many liquid eyeliners over the last few years and this little baby is definitely up in my top three (just behind Kat Von D’s Tattoo liner). The PRICE! you really can’t go wrong with how affordable this liner is. The quality is amazing, the precision of the felt lip applicator is great and it goes on line a dream.

What I don’t love: I can’t even blame this on the product.. but I have hooded eyes, more so on my right lid than the left and sometimes I notice a bit of transfer later in the day. This really only happens when I’ve been sweating so Im pretty sure it is from the sweat breaking down the liner. Lately I have been doing smaller wings to see if that helps and so far so good.

The price: Are you ready for this??… ONLY $3.49 at Shoppers Drug Mart! I told you it was a steal!

Dollar store beauty finds

If you’re reading my blog it is because you are probably a beauty/fashion lover like myself. And being a lover of all things pretty you know how expensive it can be. Whenever I am in a dollar store I always take a trip down the health/beauty aisle to see what I might find. Sometimes it is full of great stuff and other times it is just a sad place to be.

Here are a couple of my favourite dollar store finds.

Lipstick holder

I have seen something similar to this (although a different style) for over $10. So when I found these little babies at only $2 each I had to grab a few.

Disposables

I use a TON of disposable items in my freelance career and at home. Cotton balls, cotton pads, q-tips and  latex free makeup sponges can all be found in the beauty aisle of your local dollar store. Considering how many I go through this is an amazing find!

Nail Polish and other nail things.

I don’t know how many times I have come across OPI nail polish in my local dollar store. It will only run you $3 versus the drug store price that is pretty much double. Only downfall is limited colour selections available. On top of cheap nail polish you may also find these nail wraps. They are available in limited designs (I just happened to find this cool tattoo one) and only cost $2… so not a lot of out of pocket expense if they don’t work. A few other items that you will find are nail clippers, files ect. It dosn’t need to cost you and arm and a leg to keep your nails looking good! (But I am ALL for a trip to the nail salon.. just saying!)

Hair stuff.

What do they not have at the dollar store? Brushes, combs, clips and more. Granted they are not great quality but if you are in a pinch it is definitely a great option. I mean a comb is a comb right?

dollarstore

The dollar store is really hit or miss when it comes to certain types of products but sometimes you can really strike gold.

Have you ever found anything amazing in your dollar stores beauty aisle? If so what was it?

2. Put The Body Shop on your list. I love the Body Shop. One of my all time favourite  scents is “Satsuma”. If you are looking to do some last minute online shopping you can hit up their BUY 3 GET 3 FREE promotion from December 21st-December 23rd.

November IPSY bag review

IPSY

It’s that time again.

This months Ipsy bag review (my computer changed it to tipsy bag lol)

The theme this month is “Beauty Blast” and features a galactic themed make up bag. Inside were 5 products, I will probably only use 3 of them (maybe).

Ipsy

Beaute Basics navy gel eyeliner with brush. I have never used a navy liner on myself before and am really wishing that they sent me a black one. It came with an eyeliner brush which looks like every other liner brush out there.

Mai Coture “Makeup Paper” travel blush in SICILY. My favourite thing about this product is it says ” HELLO GORGEOUS” on the front. You are suppose to tap or rub the paper onto your cheeks to disperse the blush. The color is nice and all but I prefer the old fashioned way of applying my blush. You get 10 little sheets and a 50% off coupon on the back of the package.

CoolWay strong hold hair spray. That about say it.. it is a “Strong hold” hairspray, nothing overly fantastic about it. You get a 1/2 oz spray bottle.

Smashbox Full Exposure mascara. This is my favourite thing about this months bag. One of my favourite mascaras and I just so happen to run out of it recently. You get a small trial size mascara (.14 fl oz) in the bag but it will last for awhile.

Color Pop eyeshadow in STEREO. When I first saw this in the bag I was pretty excited. I have heard good things about this line. I am not so sure of the color though, which is like a purplish brown with a lot of purple glitter in it. You get a 2.1g pan in this months bag.

I am pretty sure this is going to by my last month with this subscription.. I just haven’t seen the value in it for a few months now. It is pretty disappointing because it is kinda nice to get a bag of goodies each month, but when most of it I won’t use.. it is just a waste.

Tips to keep your products fresh.

Keep lids on when not in use.

Tighten that lid. Air is the enemy for creamy/gel products.

Keep lipsticks out of the heat!

Do not submerge your brushes in water. This is a surefire way to ruin them. Also do not try on towels, they can breed mildew… ew! Hang them to dry. (For more info on brushes check out this post).

If the container is broken or the product is broken (example..powders,eyeshadows,blushes) throw it out!

IMATS Toronto-My experience

IMATS Toronto has come and gone and now it’s time to share my experience with all of you. It was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and my good friend Katie from That Geek Online joined me for the day.

The day started at 6:30 am and a late night made it really difficult to get motivated to actually get ready (lol). I had to get my hubby to print our tickets because I completely forgot to send them to him to print at work. The tickets don’t tell you that you can show your phone at the check in so there was a lot of unnecessary stress for me that morning. I had to really rush to get ready.. so I definitely don’t look glamorous lol.

I picked up Katie around 7:30 and headed off to give into my Pumpkin Spice Latte addiction, gassed up the car and headed down the 401. A lot of car karaoke ensued and before we Knew it we had arrived!

Doors opened at 10 and the line was not that long when we got there with was great. We also made two “line friends” who we spent a good chunk of the morning with (Hi Tanya and Kim if you are reading this!). As we stood waiting to get in we all scoured the exhibition floor to create our plan of attack.

First up was MORPHE. Tanya told us that apparently there was a 4-6 hour wait for this exhibitor alone. It was brush and eyeshadow central. The whole experience for us at this booth was about 1 hour from start to finish. I got quite a few brushes here and two MORPHE palettes.

We then headed to the NYX booth to see what goodies they had. There was nothing there that we couldn’t get at REXALL but with NYX coming to Canada this year it was more about that excitement than actually needing things. I picked up three of their Intense Liquid Lip Butters. One in Neapolitan, Toasted Marshmallow and Candy Apple.

Lots of random browsing of the other booths with no purchases. I came across the MUSST booth and they had the Vusset Tahiti empty palette that I have had in my sights for months. I have a ton of lipsticks in my kit that need to be depotted so this little baby will come in handy.

I found some lashes at NIGELS that were 7 for $13. I was hoping to find more selection of lashes for my bridal clients but no such luck. I also picked up some small lip brushes to include in my bridal survival kits and a new OCC Lip Tar in “Hollywood” at the Camera Ready Cosmetics booth. A very random (but necessary) purchase of an IMATS mug for $10 and I was off to the Royal and Langnickle booth to see the fabulous Kevin James Bennet and pick up more brushes.

PhotoGrid_1443469566504

A little side story.. earlier this year I attended a portfolio focus class in Chicago that was instructed by the beautiful Erica Carr and the ever handsome Kevin James Bennet. The experience was simply amazing and both Erica and Kevin have continued to be great friends and mentors for me. I just knew I couldn’t leave IMATS without tracking him down.

While at the Royal and Langnickle booth I picked up two brush sets and two separate brushes and also a small brush belt. Of course I got my picture with Kevin and got to catch up with him for a bit.

IMG_20150927_130344

The show was fun, I picked up what I needed and a few little extras but I did good at resisting non essentials. This year the show was atleast half the size of the last one which was odd. I didn’t get to see any of the speakers as we didn’t stick around the entire day.

After IMATS we wandered over to Boston Pizza for lunch. I had the Butter Chicken Flatbread which was DELISH. Our server was awesome, always making sure our glasses were filled and even gave us some wine because someone had poured it accidentally and he didn’t want to waste it :).

All in all it was a fantastic day with a new friend and fellow makeup lover. I am not sure if I will be back next year or not, we will see how my bank account is.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Keep your makeup on point this summer.

summer splash sun logo

For the last few days we have been in a “heatwave” where I live and although the heat an humidity can be a pain in the arse, nothing is worse than sitting in your car and wondering why you even bothered to do your makeup in the first place. Here are my top 5 tips for making sure your makeup will stay put for longer than 5 minutes!

5.  Nobody likes the dreaded “raccoon” eye.. it creeps up on you and just does NOT look cute. When you are really looking for dark glamorous lashes go ahead and reach for your favourite waterproof mascara but my advice to you is to try and limit how much you use it. Waterproof mascara is not the best for every day use so if you can.. grab a clear mascara to add a little volume to your lashes instead.

4. Skip the full coverage!  If you don’t need it, don’t use it. A tinted moisturizer or BB cream is a great alternative to your regular foundation routine in the summer months. Let your pores breathe a little.. and you won’t have to worry about it running down your face just from sweating.

3. Choose a creamy shadow. So you have spent forever perfecting that “smokey eye” look and an hour in the hot sun has your shadow clumpy and creasing? Switch out your powder shadows for a cream version. I actually love 24 hour color tattoo by maybelline. The formula is actually amazing and it lasts!

2. Set it and forget it! If you notice that your makeup is sweating off quickly I would suggest giving a setting spray a shot. I almost always use one when I am going out. It gives me a little peace of mind knowing I took that one extra step to make my look last. Make Up Forever “Mist n Fix” is my current go to but Urban Decay also makes a couple great ones.

1.  PRIMER.. say it with me now.. P R I M E R. This is probably the most un thought of step to the every day makeup lover. It really helps to keep your makeup in it’s place. You just need a small amount applied after your moisturizer and then finish the rest of your regular makeup routine. There are so many different types of primers on the market so do your research before you go out and spend a ridiculous amount of money on one that won’t suit your skin type.

While the tips above may work for some they may not work for you. Play around with your makeup and try different products. The makeup industry is HUGE, you will find products and techniques that will work for you.

Brush cleaning 101

1116c5d002cce27f0c796003a2ace86a

Makeup brushes can be a huge investment so it is really important that you care for them properly.

Every time your brushes come into contact with your face they are picking up dirt and bacteria. I know it sounds gross right? but it is reality. By cleaning your brushes regularly you are cutting down the risk of spreading those nasty little germs and bacteria that can cause acne and other skin issues.

First get yourself a good brush cleaning spray. There are SO many different brands in all different price ranges. The one I use most often is actually by QUO and is found at Shoppers Drugmart. It costs about $12 a bottle and lasts quite awhile. This will do a quick clean of your brushes in-between your deep cleans (more about that in a minute). Just spray on your brushes once you are done and wipe on a paper towel and allow to dry. You don’t want to completely saturate the brush because that can lead to moisture getting into the ferrule of your brush and over time will ruin them.

* Ferrule –

  • The metal band that binds the bristles or hair of a brush to its handle.

Once a week at minimum you should be doing a deep cleaning of your personal brushes. There are many shampoos on the market specifically for this but there are also a lot of DIY recipes that you could try also.

To deep clean your brushes.

  1. Take your desired brush shampoo and place some on a dish or in a shallow container.
  2. Swirl the bristles in the shampoo. You will see some makeup start to seep off your brush.
  3. On the back of your hand, rub the brush back and forth to release the makeup.
  4. Run the brush under warm (not hot!) water and work the bristles around with your finger until clean.
  5. Pat dry on paper towel.
  6. Hang to dry!. Letting your brushes lay flat or stand upright to dry is a big NO NO. This will ruin your brushes over time and we definitely don’t want that. Check out the picture below to see how I hang dry my brushes.

brush hanger

I use an old clothes hanger, some clothes pins and little elastics. Easy as pie and basically free (like $2)

I hope this post was a little helpful. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them in the box below.
