Where have I been.

I know, I know.. I disappeared again and I am sorry my lovelies. Life took a turn and I can’t even say it was “un-expected” because deep down I knew it was a possibility for a while. It is sad and scary and still hard to believe.

I rang in the New Year as a single woman for the first time in 14 years. I was able to make it through the evening without too much sadness (wine helped lol) but when the clock struck midnight and all the couples were giving celebratory smooches I felt a little empty inside. It is a huge adjustment trying to get through holidays without a partner, next up is Valentines day which won’t be easy but I already have a plan to soften the blow.

The last three months have been full of stress, worry and sadness with a little bit of hope mixed in. Trying to make sure I can financially survive on my own and keep my boys in the only home any of them really remember put a lot of stress on me. A few weeks of barely eating or sleeping lead to being irritable often and losing weight (not in a good way). I coudln’t even look at food without feeling nauseous or vomitting. Things seem to have settled down and my mind isn’t constantly racing. I am confident that I made the right choice and know there are brighter days ahead!

When you make the choice to end a relationship it doesn’t mean that it was a walk in the park. It is honestly the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life. A person can only live in a pretend bubble for so long before it breaks them down and changes them. My ex is a wonderful man in many ways and we remain friends and are amicable for our boys. I wish the best for him.

I will be sharing some of my single mom/ independant woman experiences here on the blog.. not all but some. If my journey helps someone else going through the same thing then I am happy to share it.

Beauty Review-Nyx Lip Lingerie

Lip Lingerie is NYX cosmetics new weightless liquid lipstick with a lovely matte finish. It is currently available in 12 different shades which means it is easy to find one to fit your skin tone and style!

Each shade is in the nude family so you won’t find any vibrant reds or crazy pinks but don’t worry there are other products that will fill that void for you!

What I love: The colours I chose work really well with my skin tone. I have never really been a big nude lip fan (on myself) until I found the Lip Lingerie from NYX cosmetics. I also love that it is really long wear. I have tried other brands that have promised long wear but didn’t deliver as well as this product and I don’t think they even promote it as “long wear”.

What I don’t love: It feels drying and takes some getting use to. Definitely not the worst i’ve ever experienced but if you are use to glosses and buttery lipsticks then it will definitely take some getting use to.

Cost: Around $9.00.

DIY Watercolor mug

If you have seen any of my Whole30 posts you will notice a common theme in my breakfast pictures. MUGS! I am a collector of awesome mugs..I can’t help myself, I have a serious problem lol.

I have seen this DIY watercolour mug tutorial all over Pinterest and wondered if it really worked as easily as they say. I decided to give it a go myself, what’s one more mug right?

What you will need:
*A white mug (I got mine at the dollar store)
*Nail polish, 2 colors if you want an awesome look
*A deep plastic container
*Lukewarm water
*Paper towel

What Now?
Fill your container with lukewarm water, you need enough to cover the mug without completely submerging it. Take your nail polish and pour a little bit of the first color into the water and allow it to spread out a bit. Do the same with your second color. Swirl the two colors a bit with your toothpick and then dunk your mug into the water. The nail polish will stick to the mug and when you pull it out of the water you will have an awesome, one of a kind mug! I turned my mug upside down and placed on some paper towel.Let it dry 2-3 hours and pat with a paper towel (do NOT wipe!). The design will not hold up in a dishwasher so make sure you wash it gently by hand.

Last but not least fill with coffee.. become human (that’s what I do!)

Buxom Review.

The Christmas season is the mecca for cosmetics value sets. No matter if it is a Shoppers Drug Mart or Sephora that you are shopping at they all have them. This is the time when brands want to suck you in.. they offer a ton of products at a super good price in hopes that you will fall madly in love and be a return customer.

While I was cruising around the mall last week I stumbled into Sephora and the first thing my eyes laid on was the Buxom Don’t Miss A beat Full-On Lip Polish Collection . The colors were all gorgeous and one was even named after me so of course i had to buy it.

The set contains:
– 6 x 0.07 oz Full-On Lip Glosses in Destiny (peach carnation), Nicole (shimmering strawberry), Ava (berry smoothie), Jennifer (flirty fuchsia), Kayla (preppy pink), Dolly (shimmering sultry mauve). The shades range from a soft nude to a bold pink (one of my faves!). There is something in here for every personality.

My first impression of the glosses was that the packaging was awesome and the glosses themselves went on smooth and lasted a long time! These little babies have ingredients in them to help plump up your lips for a fuller look. They are extremely minty so if you are not a fan of pepperminty things you would be best to skip these.

The set is only $40 CAD (a value of $68 CAD) and I think it is well worth the money. If you are visiting from the US it will cost you $32 USD.

Switching up the hair-Manic Panic review

I am no stranger to changing my hair color. I have gone from a brunette to red and black (yes together), to blonde, then auburn and back to blonde again. However I have never been bold enough to try a color (like pink or purple) before. That is until my good friend (and amazing photographer) Julia Busato took the picture of  below.

When I saw the photo I glanced at it quickly, then glanced again and noticed she made my hair pink!. Once I posted it to Facebook all of my friends were commenting that I should try pink hair.. so I decided to give it a go. I had no idea what product to use to achieve the pale pink like in the picture. I checked out Sally Beauty first but got cold feet at the thought of pink hair and walked out empty handed. I came home and about 20 minutes later went to Shoppers Drugmart and with the help of a Beauty Advisor there I picked up Manic Panic in “Cotton Candy” and their “Pastel-izer”. It cost about $46 dollars for the color, gloves and a hair color brush (which I didn’t even use lol).

The application was SO easy. I just mixed the Cotton Candy into the Pastel-izer to create a light pink and applied it to my hair for about 35 minutes. I did do a strip test (VERY important) first to make sure I actually liked it and I not only liked it.. but LOVED it! My husband actually commented on how “flowy” my hair was afterward. Which is funny because… well husbands tend to not notice these things. I really loved using the Manic Panic and will definitely try it again.

I have had the color in for about 3 weeks now and have noticed some fading but considering I did such a pale tint I am not surprised. I have enough product left to do at least two touch ups.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done to your hair?

What to pack for Blissdom Canada

This week I will be travelling to Blue Mountain resort to join over 200 bloggers and social media influencers at Blissdom Canada. To say I am excited is a huge understatement. This will be my fourth year attending the conference and sadly this will be the last large conference for Blissdom.

I have been going back and forth on what I need to pack for the last few weeks. I know that might seem a little strange but let me explain. I will be heading to Vaughn Mills with my good friend and roomie Sarah from (       ) on Thursday and taking a shuttle from the mall up to Blue Mountain. When we come back to Toronto on Sunday we will be heading to the Total Women Show at the Metro Toronto Convention centre. Because we will be checking our bags at the convention centre I need to strategically pack to make my travels as stress free as possible.

The first plan of attack was to study the schedule of events and find out what I would be wearing for each of the nightly festivities.

Thursday night consists of the sponsor & newcomer meet and treat event followed by the welcome reception with CHOIR CHOIR CHOIR. Because one starts right after the other I will only need to pack one outfit. I decided to go with something in-between casual and dressy.

Friday is the much anticipated Mardi Gras party that is sponsored by Canadian Lentils. Last year they put on an incredible Circus themed event that was just awesome. For this event I plan on rocking a little black dress, heels and of course a mask.

Saturday night is the closing out of Blissdom and this year it will be ushered out with a plaid and jeans event at one of Blue Mountains bars. I am honestly not a huge fan of plaid on myself.. but I am still hunting for something that I will feel comfortable in for this event. You would think that since plaid is a huge thing right now it would be easy, not so much. Maybe I should just look for a plaid hankie.. because in true Blissdom fashion there will be many tears shed.

My attire for the daytime sessions will consist of comfortable and warm outfits. There is a little bit of a walk from where we are staying to the conference centre so comfortable shoes are a must.

Non clothing essentials to pack:

  • makeup (limited)
  • personal hygiene items
  • Ipad, pens,paper, business cards
  • tylenol, kleenex

No matter if this is your first conference or you are a seasoned conference attendee.. the most important thing to bring with you is not any piece of clothing, but a positive attitude and open mind. Soak in as much information as you can and take the time to forge relationships with other bloggers.

The beginners guide to makeup.

Welcome newbie!

So you have decided to dabble in the wonderful world of makeup have you? Well have no fear my little doe eyed friend. Below you will find my top tips for makeup newbies.

First off, please do not get scared of the makeup aisle. I know it can be very overwhelming when you are just starting out. Hundreds of products just sitting there, all seemingly yelling out ” buy me… buy me!”.

TIP # 1 -Don’t give in to the temptation… save your money and just get the basics.

What ARE the basics you ask? Well here you go.

  • Mascara (regular and waterproof)
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Eyeliner
  • Eyeshadows (go for a palette of preselected shades to get you started)
  • Lipstick (or gloss if you are not a lipstick lover…yet!)
  • Translucent powder (a must for setting your foundation)
  • Blush
  • Makeup remover
  • Brushes
  • Brush cleaner

Tip #2 –  Take your time.

Starting out can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Just take your time, play around and eventually you will master the techniques you need to achieve your perfect look.  Trust me, I had some pretty interesting eyeliner mishaps when I first started wearing it.

Tip #3- Instagram is 95% FAKE!

Most of the female population is looking at Instagram for their makeup inspiration. Let’s get one thing straight right now.. Instagram photos.. 95% of them at least are photoshopped within an inch of their life! Unless you put the photo through photoshop, and THEN through an Instagram filter, don’t expect to leave the house looking like an “Insta Celeb”. Remember that with or without makeup you are a beautiful person. Makeup is not a necessity of life but if you feel like adding it into your routine I hope my three simple tips above helped even just a little bit.

My August favorites

August has come and gone so it is time to share with you some of my favourite things (beauty related and non) from this past month. I had to think long and hard about what I wanted to put in this post and it actually started making my brain hurt. I should probably write things down next time so that Septembers favourites goes a little smoother.

I have a love for unique,funny/cute mugs. I can’t help it, I get drawn to them whenever I am out. Coffee is my drink of choice and having an interesting mug to sip from enhances the experience for me.

This “Love thy selfie” mug is one of my favourites. Not only because the message is great, but because I am a queen of selfies (I know.. I know..). I found this gem at Homesense for $5.99 and it is the perfect addition to my ever growing collection.

Make Up Forever Aqua Black waterproof cream liner . This little baby is SO awesome. If you are a lover of MAC’s “backtrack” then you will LOVE this one. I was a loyal blacktrack user but MUFE’s aqua black is giving it a run for it’s money. The staying power is way better and I find it is easier to apply. It will run you $28 and you can get it from Sephora.

Kat Von D Shade + Light eye contour palette. This is a must have in anyone’s collection. The Shade + Light eye palette is designed with 3 base colors, 3 contour colors, 3 defining shades and 3 highlighting shades. The best thing is the colors are ALL matte, and the perfect shades. Each color is super pigmented which means it is a great quality and worth every penny. Buy it here.

Macarons! Definitely not makeup related. But.. O M G . These little babies are super delicious and you can get them in so many different flavours it is unreal. They are on the expensive side (around $2.00 each locally) but so worth it. I like them so much I actually bought a macaron kit from Michaels and started making my own. Within a few tries I had a perfect macaron and can now make them whenever the heck I feel like it.

So there you have it. A few of my favourite things from August. I must admit, I should have put macarons right up there at the top because they were seriously the best thing that happened to me last month (lol).

How about you leave me a comment below and let me know what became your new favourite thing in August 🙂

The lowdown on liners.

With the abundance of cosmetics products on the shelves today it can seem a little daunting trying to find the perfect product. Trust me.. I know! How many times have you wandered the aisles and wondered “what the heck do I buy?”. Well fear not my faithful makeup lovers. Below you will find just a little information about the different types of eyeliners and what my favourites are.

pencillinerPencil- This was probably your first introduction to the world of eyeliner and is a great start to anyone’s makeup kit. It is so easy to apply and super versatile. I use my pencil liners primarily for tight lining my upper lid and lining along the water line. These liners are a little hit and miss for ease of use. Some can be incredibly hard and therefore difficult to apply. My advice is test the liner on your hand before you purchase. If it glides on easily then you are good to go, if you really have to apply pressure to get it to move.. leave it behind. Your eyelids are a very sensitive part of your body.. do you really want to be jamming them with a stiff eyeliner pencil? There is such an array of colours in pencil liners that you will have no problem creating your perfect look.

Some of my faves: Urban Decay’s glide on eye pencil and Maybelline Line Express.

GelGel/Cream- This little babies are my favourite by far! I love the consistency and the ease of application. My favourite thing about them is that you have complete control over how much product you use. They come in a little pot and most drug store brands supply you with a teeny tiny brush for application. I suggest you spend a couple of bucks and pick up an actual eye liner brush to make your life easier.

Some of my faves: MAC “Blacktrack” or Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel.

liquidLiquid- This type of liner is mainly popular for creating that dramatic cat eye look that we have been seeing so much of. Liquid liners are just that.. a liquid. They come in either a pen type packaging with a felt tipped applicator or in a little bottle with a fine brush applicator. These can be a little tricky to use so make sure you practice and try to be patient, you will get better with it over time. With so many liquid liners on the market my advice is to look for one that isn’t overly runny. Watery liner can = big problems. Imagine doing the perfect cat eye and then your liner starts to run and in a flash, your perfect cat eye is not so perfect.

Some of my faves: Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” and Eve Pearl Smudgeproof liquid liner in “Black Pearl”.

I hope this post gave you a little bit of insight on the different varieties of eyeliners that you can choose from. Applying liner can be pretty difficult for some. Don’t fret, just keep on practicing.. and if you don’t get it.. well you could always become an internet meme.

July #Ipsy bag..it’s here!

“What is Ipsy” you say? Well it is a monthly subscription of preselected beauty products that are delivered right to your door. It works out to be about $17 CAD and I think $14 USD after shipping. Each month is a different theme and a different little cosmetics bag.

Here is a peek at what was in my July Ipsy bag.

  1. Octavio “La Playa” Sea salt spray infused with Algae Extract. This product is designed to create natural texture and volume by using the richness of the sea. How do you use it? Spray on damp or dry hair and let dry naturally for a natural look or use a diffuser or blow dryer for more fullness.  This product is not tested on animals and you get a 2 fl oz (59 ml) bottle in your bag.
  2. Gel Effect nail lacquer by AURORA (4 Alarm Fire).  Thanks to my crappy phone camera you can’t really make out the true colour of this polish. It is really a bright reddish pink. It looks nice enough, but because I have had HORRIBLE luck with the nail polishes I receive with Ipsy bags I don’t have high hopes for it.  You get a full size .042 fl oz (12 ml) bottle.
  3. VASANTI Brighten Up! Enzymatic face rejuvenator.  This is an exfoliating cleanser enriched with papaya, micro-crystals and aloe. It is designed to “dramatically improve your skin’s texture to reveal softer, brighter and younger looking skin”. Use 3-5 times a week for best results. You get a 20 g tube of it in your bag.
  4. be a…. bombshell lip gloss (ruby). This is your standard red tinted lip gloss. I have received a few products by this brand and I haven’t been impressed by any so far. You get a full 16 oz tube in your bag.
  5. tarte Amazonian clay waterproof bronzer (park ave princess). This alone had me SO excited for my July bag. It is a beautiful soft bronzer that doesn’t appear orange. oompa loompa skin is not sexy, I don’t care who you are.. it just isn’t!. You get a 3 g (0.11 oz) compact in your bag.

With the exception of the nail polish and lip gloss I was pretty happy with my Ipsy bag this month. I will probably give it a few more months to see if I will continue my subscription but I have a feeling I won’t be able to quit my Ipsy habit.

If you would like to sign up to receive your own Ipsy bag follow this link and before you know it you will have little pink bags of love in your mailbox!
